Can Business Success be Gender Neutral?

Building Dale Carnegie Training in India from scratch has come with plenty of challenges, but also valuable insights. Our company now represents the most premium face of the corporate training industry in India, but looking back, my professional journey has taught me some things about succeeding as a woman.

When I initially started working, though I hail from an old business family, my entry into one of our family organizations created quite a flutter. I was the first daughter of the family to cross the threshold into the men’s domain. To top it, I joined the construction business, which for all purposes was male dominated. It was an uphill task to be initially accepted on the same footing as my older, male colleagues. When I became an entrepreneur in the HR industry, I frankly found it to be a lot more open towards women.

As an entrepreneur, I faced the same challenges that anyone starting a business faces. That is when I realized that business success is gender neutral. One has to deliver the same results and it takes the same competencies and capabilities for both men and women to succeed in their work. In my experience, most successful women are not the ones who try to stand apart from men, but they are the ones who focus on pursuing their passion.

In that sense, the emphasis for women should be more on what not to do. They should not wear their gender as a badge and should not use it as an excuse. I personally believe in equality of sexes, not superiority of one over the other.

My most standout take-away when it comes to running a profitable business and getting results is that if you bring value to your clients, they take you seriously.
